I love Blender, but one of the hands down most irritating things is the default hotkey for switching between Vertex,Edge and Face editing modes.  CTRL + TAB + 1/2/3 is just too many keys for something common.  Fortunately Blender 2.5x adds the ability to define hotkeys, but it isn’t as easy as you might expect.

 

 

The steps:

 

Press CTRL + ALT + U to bring up user preferences.

 

Select the Input Tab

 

Scroll down and expand 3D View –> Mesh, like such:

Click the Add New button:

Add the following three entries:

In my case I am using a Mac keyboard, which has an F16, F17 and F18 key above the numberpad.  You can use whatever value you want ( that aren’t used in Mesh mode already). 

 

The value entered in Context Attrib is “tool_settings.mesh_select_mode”.  The Value: fields represent what modes to enable, vertices, edges and faces in that order.  So True, False, False says to enable Vertices, but not Faces or Edges.

 

 

Now, voila.  I click “Save as Default” and now I have a single hotkey for toggling between the editing modes.  I really should have done this ages ago.  In the meanwhile I learned the Blender customization is downright amazing.

Alright, so it happened 6 days ago, but today is the first time I noticed.

 

 

Blender's document has had a serious facelift.  The new version is much nicer and addresses one of the worst aspects of Blender, the so-so documentation.  The content is the same but now it is actually accessible.

When just starting out with Blender, figuring your way around the UI is probably the most difficult step.  One of the most difficult things to come to terms with is creating and closing windows.  This is something that changed massively from Blender 2.4 to 2.5, so a lot of the documentation out there is simply out dated.

 

This video shows you how to arrange Blender exactly how you want it.  Once you figure out the way things work, it is amazingly power, but it can be confusing at first.  The video is of Blender 2.59 and is shot at 1080p for maximum clarity.

I’ve been a little to focused on C++ I completely missed and forgot to mention that a new release of Blender, Blender 2.59 was release (*cough* 3 days ago *cough*). A ton of new bug fixes, include one specifically for exporting to Unity, have been addressed.  Additionally added support for 3D Mouse(s?), Custom Keymapping, an Ivy and Tree generator.

I will check shortly to see if it works “out of the box” with Unity.

 

EDIT: 8/17/2011  Nope, default export didn’t work.  Can’t say I’m shocked.

EDIT2: User woodn has provided an updated importer script.  Download it, extract the .py file and extract it to your Unity install directory /Editor/Tools folder, overwriting the existing importer.

After updating the import script it would successfully import dae files, but wouldn’t automatically process .blend files, at least for me.

In my prior descriptions, I had some not too nice words for the GIMP.  For those that have GIMPnever heard of it, The Gimp is a free art program, generally regarded as the closest thing to Photoshop that the OpenSource world has to offer.  In my prior use, I found the GIMP pretty much terrible and I resorted to using the much less powerful but more more enjoyable Paint.Net.

 

 

 

 

That said, I started running into limitations almost instantly, so I gave the GIMP another shot, and colour me impressed!  I managed to import multiple screenshots, into a single layer, resize and crop them all in one action, optimize and export for animated GIF in minutes.  This was an eye opening experience!

 

That said, I then spent 5 minutes and had to resort to Googling to figure out how to draw a line… so, yeah, the UI still needs a bit of work!  Fortunately that is what they are working on now.  All told though, I really shouldn’t have had such a negative view of this app, when using it to actually get something done, as opposed to just messing around in it, it came through brilliantly.
