Looking for the perfect gift for the geek who has everything?  Well, Learn Lua for iOS Game Development is coming out just before Christmas , plus it’s on sale for 25 bucks.  ( What’s with pre-release books already being on sale??? ).

 

 

Alright, hundreds of computer texts are released every year, dozens of them about game programming… so why the interest in this particular book?  You may remember a while back I put together  Battle of the Lua Game Engines: Corona vs. Gideros vs. Love vs. Moai and I actually enjoyed working with all three technologies.  Well this book covers using all three SDKs as well as Codea which I hadn’t heard of until this point.

 

 

Obviously the book isn’t going to cover any of those technologies in detail, each one could probably merit it’s own book.  It should however teach you the required bits of Lua and expose you to a little more detail than my comparison.  Lua is a wonderful little language, one you should certainly look into if you haven’t already.  This book may just be the right introduction, it releases on December 17th.

Most APress books end up on Safari Books Online, so expect a review shortly after this book is released.  It does strike me a bit odd that they would limit the title to iOS games, when Corona, Gideros and Moai all support Android as well ( without change in most cases ) and I don’t believe Love supports iOS at all…?  So if you are interested in Android development, don’t let the title put you off.

As the title says, I have inserted a new book into the Unity book list, 3D Games Monetization with Unity and Leadbolt. I do however use the word book in the loosest terms possible, as it is in electronic format only and it weighs in at a mere 37 pages.

 

That said, it also weights in at a mere 3$, so there is that…

 

I will admit, before discovering this book, I had never heard of Leadbolt. they are a mobile ad provider in the vein of adMob, but with a world more options than simple banners.

 

 

Ads can be added at the application entry point, while running and at the exit point.

 

I personally HATE ads in mobile games, and gladly pay a premium for an ad free version ( which sadly most developers do not embrace, at least not on Android ), but perhaps ads in a different format will make a difference.

 

Anyways, if you are a Unity developer and are interested in monetization, you have a new book to check out.

 

It is my intention to keep the list as comprehensive as possible, so if I have missed a title or you are the author of an upcoming title, please let me know.

Set to be published in August, this new book Unity 3.x Scripting has been added to the Unity book193D book round up.

 

In the publishers own words:

As I have been working with Cocos2D-html ( and PlayStation GameEngine2D which is based on cocos2D ) lately, I decided to take a look at what the cocos2D book situation was like.  While about half as large as my Unity 3D book round-up there is still a nice, growing collection of cocos2D related books.

 

The cocos2D book round-up is a collection of every currently published book on the subject of cocos2D.  It contains all of the details you may want to know when selecting a book ( author, page count, rating, links to Amazon, Safari Books Online and the publisher, publish date, table of contents, publisher description, etc ) all on a single page.  So if you are in the market for a book on cocos2D, or just want to see what all is available, start here.

 

I am to be as comprehensive as possible, so if I’ve missed a book on the subject, or made a mistake, please let me know!

The LUA based Corona SDK is one of those things I have really been intending to check out forCoronaBook a very long time now.  One of the biggest reasons I haven’t looked closer ( other than time ) was the complete lack of published materials.  Today however, I logged in to Safari and low and behold, Corona SDK Mobile Game Development is right there in the new releases section.

 

 

This is perhaps the worst timing ever, I am still throwing myself quite fully at PlayStation SDK development as well as working on a Titanium based app… but, but… this is shiny and new! (well, the book is new anyways…)

 

 

Actually, Corona and more specifically LUA are two products I have heard nothing but rave reviews of, so this certainly is of interest to me.  I’ve skim read the book and it seems quite impressive.  If I dive in, I will be sure to put up a review.  I have to say, I am quite impressed with Packt press lately and the range of books they are putting out.  The book is also available on Amazon but oddly enough shows a May 31st publish date( it’s April 27th at the time of this post), but also lists it as being in stock so I am guessing it’s available to order.

 

 

Have you worked with LUA/Corona?  Is the hype justified? Is it substantially better than the free Moai SDK, which is also LUA based?
