SketchFab is one of my favorite online model resources, a resource that I recently featured in the Free 3D Models Resources guide a few days back.  Earlier this year SketchFab launched a beta online store where users can buy and sell 3D models using the excellent SketchFab infrastructure.  Today, that store is out of beta and officially released.  Until July 4th SketchFab is offering a 10% off discount with the code SKETCHFAB10.

The Sketchfab Store combines our powerful browser-based 3D player and Model Inspector to let buyers scrutinize every aspect of a model including textures and topology in real-time. And with VR and AR support out of the box providing immersive ways to review models before purchase, our store take the guesswork out of purchasing 3D files online, an industry first.

But we haven’t stopped there. During the past six months we’ve solicited feedback from buyers and sellers and regularly added new features in response to your recommendations. We developed a new model page layout for store models that’s better optimized to sell content and surface the information that’s relevant to buyers. We’ve also made some adjustments to our search system to highlight relevant results in the Sketchfab Store while continuing to support our vibrant existing community of creators.

Lately we’ve featured a couple RPG Maker style game engines targeted at creating JRPG style games, including RPG In a Box and Smile Game Builder.  Today we are looking at RPG Playground, the work of a single developer.  RPG Playground is built using the Haxe programming language and the Kha framework, another topic we’ve covered recently.


Right now RPG Playground isn’t incredibly full featured, it’s got world building tools, a nice collection of tiles and animated sprites to work with and a basic game scripting system.  In time the developer intends to add the ability for artists to add their own content while giving programmers the ability to extend the engine and create a game with no need for an artist.  Here is the developers ultimate master plan for the project from the Road Map:

  1. Build a tool that allows anyone to make their own Role Playing Games, and easily let others play their game.
  2. Make sure artists can make an RPG using their own graphics, without the need of a programmer.
  3. Make sure programmers can make a game without the need of an artist.
  4. Programmers will extend the engine, so any game type can be build at this time: platformers, 3D, … .

Version 8.3 of the popular Haxe media library OpenFL was just released.  OpenFL implements the Flash api, enabling developers to create cross platform rich media apps and games for several different platforms.

The 8.3 release includes some improvements to tilemap supports but mostly contains a variety of fixes including:


  • Added tile.blendMode and tilemap.tileBlendModeEnabled
  • Added netStream.dispose() and improved netStream.close() support
  • Improved buffer handling for OpenGL Tilemap rendering
  • Fixed default HTML5 template after Chrome passive event listener change
  • Fixed a regression in rendering of TextFormatAlign.JUSTIFY text
  • Fixed dispatching of Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE on document class in NPM builds
  • Fixed missing loader.contentLoaderInfo.bytes field
  • Fixed using bitmapData.hitTest against another BitmapData object
  • Fixed return value of eventDispatcher.dispatchEvent() when default is prevented
  • Fixed timing issue with multiple texture units in custom OpenGL shaders
  • Fixed MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER/MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT to dispatch in each event phase
  • Fixed some issues when using -Dopenfl-power-of-two textures
  • Fixed stage.color to mark rendering as dirty when changed
  • Fixed openfl.net.Socket on HTML5 to allow reading of input later

Unreal Engine 4.20 just got one step closer to production ready with the release of 4.20 preview 4.  Generally preview 1 is the release with all new bells and whistles (like the new Niagara particle system), while each subsequent preview is all about purging the bugs and ironing out kinks that are discovered and preview 4 is no exception.  This release contains 100% product fixes, but there are quite a few of them.  If you are interested in learning more about the functionality that is being added in 4.20 be sure to check out our video, also embedded below.
