Often times, especially when modeling real world objects, you like to use a reference image to model against.  The following video shows how to setup a pair of reference images in Wings 3D.  The process is pretty straight forward.

 

Step 1:  With nothing selected, right click and select Image Plane…

Step 2: Select the file to use as your background image.

Step 3: You can now rotate,scale, etc… the image until it is in the location you want. When scaling or translating, make sure you are in body ( B ) mode, so it all scales properly.

Step 4: Now you can add as many more as you want ( side profile, front, etc… )

Step 5: Now you can should lock the image planes so they cannot be selected.  Select nothing ( spacebar ), now Select(Menu)->Lock UnSelected Objects.

Done.

One thing you are going to find very different when working with Wings 3D is that there are very few hotkeys.  It’s very much user driven and it is expected that you will define hotkeys all of your own.  Right off the bat, there is one you should define, that of Cut->Edge.  This shows just how simple the process is.

 

First off, bring up the menu containing the item you want to hotkey.

Hit the insert key.

Look at the status bar for instructions or further details. 

Hit the key you want to assign as a hotkey.

 

Done.

 

 

I highly suggest assigning Cut to it’s own hotkey, it will greatly increase your speed.  Really, the key thing to remember here is, when using Wings 3D, hit the Insert Key to bind a hotkey.  Should you screw up, you can always fix your mistakes using the advice in this thread.

Saved a hotkey you wish you hadn’t?  Want to go back to default settings?  It’s easy enough.

 

In Windows 7, follow the following steps.

 

Hit the Start button

Type “   %appdata%   “ then press enter

In the explorer window that opens, select the Wings3D folder.

Now either delete or edit the preferences.txt file to match your new settings.  Next time you run Wings this file will be recreated if deleted.

So there is a blog post up on Unity3d.com showing what’s coming down the pipeline.  There’sunityLogo some pretty interesting stuff on there.  Apparently Unity 3.4 is at the release candidate stage and there are a few major announcements.  Terrain support in iOS and Android is a biggy, execution order on scripts, procedural texture support and 2-3x improvement in skinning speed are all very nice new features.

 

The post goes on to describe what is in the upcoming 3.5 release, with tons of new features but perhaps the most interesting to me are the new UI framework, pathfinding and LoD support.  Some really interesting stuff coming up, I highly recommend you check out the full post.

Earlier this week I described the process of building Blender for Windows using CMake and Visual Studio.  While I was doing I actually did a series of screen captures for the more visual learners amongst us.  Problem is, my machine decided editing 1080p video was a crime against humanity, so I wasn’t able to get them posted.  I can happily say, the problems have been rectified.

You had to imagine you would hear something from CryEngine from the GDC after Unity and Unreal made their announcements, and they did… sorta.

 

The full announcement is here, but most of it is below:

 

As a first tier of its new program, Crytek has revealed that from May this year, indie developers will be able to use all of CRYENGINE's cutting-edge features for a monthly subscription fee of 9,90 USD/EUR per user - royalty free. Those features include the recently announced addition of CRYENGINE features such as Physically Based Shading, Geometry Cache and  Image Based Lighting - an upgrade already shown in action by Crytek at this year's GDC conference in San Francisco.


More details about the game-changing opportunities on offer to developers as part of the program will be announced in the near future. The CRYENGINE free SDK will continue to be available under its current terms but developers wanting to take advantage of the new features of CRYENGINE will need to subscribe to the new EaaS-Program. 


Crytek's Director of Business Development , Carl Jones, said: "When we announced the new CRYENGINE this was our first step towards creating an engine as a service. We are happy to announce now that the latest update of CRYENGINE will soon be available to all developers on a subscription basis. We are really excited to make CRYENGINE available to hundreds of thousands of developers working with Crytek to make awesome games.”

… I’ve read and re-read a number of times and I simply can’t get what exactly they just announced.  The best I can take away from this comes from:

So unless there is more to come, CryEngine just announced that updates for CryEngine Free are now… not so free?  On the other hand, there is the line:

This sounds like if you pay 10$ a month you can ship a title completely free of royalties?  That frankly sounds way too good to be true.

 

We are going to have to wait for the fine print on this one folks.  I will update here if more becomes clear.

Not exactly revealing.  The search continues, there has to be a catch here.  Crytek simply can’t make money off $10/month without royalties unless there is a revenue cap or an up-sell somewhere.
